Is The Internet The New Cupid?

There was a time when meeting someone was something that happened by chance and almost always in person. You would run into someone on the street, in a bar or club, or at a club where you share common interests. Most couples would have ended up meeting in high school, college, graduate school, or even at work. However, the world has changed so much and in many ways we are busier and living our lives at a faster pace than ever before. This is why the modern world needs a new alternative to meeting people of the opposite sex. That is where dating sites come into the picture. While many people scoff and think that meeting someone online is beyond ridiculous, there are plenty of examples of happily married couples who met for the first time by chatting on the internet.

The Top Sites:

The top dating sites out there, such as Match.com, OKCupid, and eHarmony all have certain aspects in common. Then again, they also have very fundamental differences that provide for a very unique experience of being matched with people. The first dating sites that were introduced a few years ago simply had search criteria’s that you could use to sort out people who you were interested in. That is no longer the case.

How Dating Sites Help You Find Matches:

  • Personal interests and living habits.
  • Extremely private questions about faith.
  • Questions about politics, how to live one’s life, children, and health.
  • Via a search criteria that can let you sort people out based on age, race, smoking/drinking habits, and/or location

How To Best Utilize Dating Sites:

The mistake that many people make is that they do not use dating sites properly. Instead of being completely honest and answering the many questions that they are asked, they simply go for looks and more “shallow” dating criteria. While this may be a good idea if you are just looking for someone to have a good time with, it is not a practical long term solution to finding a partner. After all, when you meet someone you are going to know all about what they think on certain issues. If you end up disagreeing on so many things, the relationship will simply go no where.

The best way to sort that out immediately is to answer EVERY question that the dating site asks you. Even if you feel uncomfortable, simply answer it. Why? Because it will enable you to be matched with a higher accuracy to other people who are of similar views and living habits. The difference between a liberal, atheist and a conservative, Jew can be huge. While you may not notice it at first, it could eventually make or break your relationship. Best to approach dating from a more practical and thoughtful perspective early on.

Another important thing with dating sites is to approach the initial chat/conversation with creativity. Do not simply say “Hello, How are you?” or something to the effect. Start with a quote from your favorite book/movie/TV show, or just start talking about what you did over the previous week. Or even tell a good joke.

Dating sites are the way forward for those who seriously want to find a long term partner. Do not be afraid to use them sensibly so that you are taking full use of what you are paying for.
