Top 10 Most Expensive Domain Names EVER!

May 8th, 2008 | by Amy Mou

Many news agencies all over the world reported the story of a man named as Chris Clark, who sold the domain name of pizza.com, which he had purchased in 1994 for only $20, for $2.6 million.

It is amazing when people are ready to pay a large amount of money for something that does not actually exist. Nevertheless, it is well-known that such domain names, which can stand for a whole industry, can be sold for millions of dollars.

Below, you can find the list of most expensive domain names according to Yahoo! Tech. The list naturally only includes the domain names that have been resold. It does not include such names as yahoo.com or google.com, which still belong to their original owners. As a rule, the market value of such domains may considerably exceed the value indicated below.

1. Sex.com, $12.5 million

2. Porn.com, $9.5 million

3. Diamond.com, $7.5 million

4. Business.com, $7.5 million

5. Casino.com, $5.5 million

6. Asseenontv.com, $5 million

7. Korea.com, $5 million

8. Wine.com, $3.3 million

9. Creditcheck.com, $3 million

10. Vodka.com, $3 million

Everything seems to be clear with sex.com and diamond.com. However, Asseenontv.com may cause bewilderment. Common logic says that the domain names consisting of only one word are supposed to be most valuable. However, there can be exceptions.

What do you think of MadeinChina.com? It was bought at a low price but I think it is a very promising domain name as products made in China is becoming more and more popular internationally.

I love how most of those domain names have to do with human vices, e.g., sex, porn, casino, vodka, korea… Okay, just kidding about Korea (Amy knows Asians rule :)). But, I did hear that Korea has two regular cable channels dedicated to showing other people play video games 24/7. That is totally irrelevant, but I thought it was cool.

hi there. at least 2 errors:

    1. pizza.com could not cost 20 USD back in 1994. domains were 100 USD for 2 years.

    2. you are missing many top domains there - i know at least one which tops my mind - fund.com this year was around 10 milion USD.

Yeah, Korea is the “Màijiā” for video game fans and Japan for porn lovers.

    beer.com - $7M - 2004 - private sale
    shop.com - $3.5M - 2003/11 - private sale

fund.com was sold for $50 less $1M (i guess would be some VAT issue or something as they didnt agree at $1M, any idea) - 2008/03 at monkier
